Governor Rutherford, and the State of Maryland have issued a Governor’s proclamation for May 25th as “Maryland Export Day”. The Maryland/D.C. DEC pursued this proclamation as it saw the importance of recognizing Maryland exports and exporters during World Trade Month. In 2020, Maryland goods exports were valued at an estimated $13 billion and supported more than 52,000 jobs.
A GOVERNOR’S PROCLAMATION FOR “MARYLAND EXPORT DAY”
May 18, 2021 – Baltimore. The Maryland/D.C. District Export Council (Maryland/D.C. DEC) is pleased to announce Governor Hogan, Lt. Governor Rutherford, and the State of Maryland have issued a Governor’s proclamation for May 25th as “Maryland Export Day”. The Maryland/D.C. DEC pursued this proclamation as it saw the importance of recognizing Maryland exports and exporters during World Trade Month. In 2020, Maryland goods exports were valued at an estimated $13 billion and supported more than 52,000 jobs.
Despite worldwide economic challenges in 2020, Maryland exports have exceeded an average of over 2 percent growth year-over-year from 2018. Philip Grove, the Chair of the Maryland/D.C. DEC and International Sales at Ellicott Dredges, commented, “While the past year saw many challenges, the inertia of growth in Maryland exports remained on an upward trajectory. This is due in no small part to the quality of the federal and state-run international trade agencies that support Maryland’s manufacturers and service providers’ global efforts.”
The state’s largest manufacturing export category is transportation equipment, followed by chemicals, machinery (except electrical), computer & electronic products, and other fabricated metal products. According to the office of the United States Trade Representative, over 6,200 Maryland companies are active exporters with small and medium-sized firms generating over 30 percent of Maryland’s total exports. Most of the exports from Maryland are bound for Canada, France, the Netherlands, Japan and Saudi Arabia.
About the MD/DC DEC: The Maryland/Washington D.C. District Export Council, Inc. (MD/DC DEC) is one of more than 60 District Export Councils throughout the United States. DECs are organizations of leaders from local business communities, appointed by successive Secretaries of Commerce since 1973, whose knowledge of international business provides a source of professional advice for local firms. Working closely with the Department of Commerce’s U.S. Export Assistance Centers (USEACs), DEC members volunteer their time to sponsor and participate in numerous trade promotion activities. Like the USEACs, they are especially focused on assisting small and medium sized exporters.
The MD/DC DEC consists of international business leaders from Maryland and Washington, D.C. As such, it works closely with the Baltimore USEAC and with the U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service of the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C.
